Dr. Richard F. Haines, is the Chief Scientist for the National Aviation Reporting Center on Anomalous Phenomena (NARCAP). His research focuses on airline sightings, airline safety, and these strange aerial mysteries. Dr. Haines goes into quite comprehensive detail about military/civilian pilot sightings, electromagnetic interference effects and the 3400 actual unknown reports collated from aviation professionals, civilian and military. here is an example of a typical well documented report of military warplanes engaging Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon. Here is one of the best, well documented encounter that made world headlines.
JAL Flight 1628 Over Alaska
In November, 1986, a Japanese crew of a jumbo freighter aircraft witnessed three unidentified objects while flying over Alaska, USA. This sighting gained international attention when the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced that it was going to officially investigate this sighting because the Air Route Traffic Control Center in Anchorage, Alaska, had reported that the UAP had been detected on radar. Captain Terauchi was featured on numerous radio and TV programs and in People Magazine. Within a few months of these events he was grounded, apparently for his indiscretion of reporting a UAP, even though he was a senior captain with an excellent flying record. Several years later he was reinstated. The UAPs in this case were tracked on both ground and airborne radar, witnessed by experienced airline pilots, and confirmed by a FAA Division Chief.

5:21 PM. JL1628, HB747, BIKF-ANC reported traffic at his altitude (FL350) one mile with a white and yellow strobe. AAL ROC and EDF ROCC notified. No known traffic identified.
After 3 to 5 minutes the two craft change their relative position, which is not reported to AARTCC, and the captain unsuccessfully attempts to photograph them.
5:22:11 AARTCC [Requests information about weather and clouds]
5:22:41 AARTCC [Informs JAL-1628 that transmissions are garbled and asks them to change transmitting frequencies.]
5:23:05 JAL-1628 [Reports clouds below them].
5:23:13 JAL-1628 And now the target, ah, traffic is extinguished [i.e. disappeared]. We cannot see it now.
VHF transmissions have returned to normal after 10 to 15 minutes of heavy interference.
5:23:19 AARTCC JAL1628 Roger. And I’m not receiving any radar replies.
